Marble Through the Seasons

Marble Through the Seasons

Marble doesn't stay the same year-round, and in Oman the changes are easy to miss until they show. At Kate Kerdi Home, we get asked how a marble table copes with the climate, so here is what actually matters.

Summer heat is the first factor. In Muscat, direct sun through a window can heat one section of a slab far more than the rest. Marble expands slightly with heat, and uneven warming over time can dull the polish or, in rare cases, stress the stone. A table near a west-facing window benefits from sheer curtains or a shifted position during peak afternoon hours.

Humidity is the quieter problem. Coastal air carries moisture, and marble is porous. Once the seal wears down, water and oils absorb faster, leaving marks that are harder to lift. This is why sealing frequency matters more here than in drier regions.

As a general guide, seal a marble table every six to twelve months, more often if it is used daily for dining or sits near a kitchen or balcony door. A simple test: drop a little water on the surface. If it beads, the seal is holding. If it darkens the stone, it is time to reseal.

Daily care is simple. Wipe spills quickly, use coasters, and clean with a pH-neutral cleaner rather than anything acidic.

Marble handles Oman's seasons well when it is looked after. It just asks for a little attention when the weather shifts.
